Summer Camp – July 2017, Dundalk/Dublin
Our unique JUNIOR SHAKESPEARES SUMMER WRITING CAMP teaches your child how to write their own success stories in the best fun way! We also encourage children with Dyslexia, and those on the Autism spectrum to come and join in our classes! As Tutor, I have taught children with various challenges and everyone goes home smiling, having written a story and starting a new chapter! That is a guarantee!
Children with greater writing abilities learned specifically through Shakespeare, have been shown to:
- Achieve academic success in later years from a gathered background of limitless vocabulary, spelling and grammar.
- Communicate more effectively as they develop correct spelling as well as precise grammar needed to convey their ideas in written form.
- Improve mature instincts from understanding how shades and meaning can convey emotions.
- Become more empathetic through studying themes in Shakespeare’s writing.
- Gain level-headed thinking from structured writing, leading to greater social connections with others and improved confidence as adults.
- Develop cognitive skills and generate ideas through analysing, evaluating and making inferences.
They Will Learn!
Children learn from a fun-packed and wide-ranging schedule. Early morning we begin with descriptions of Shakespeare, taking fun lessons in writing through the senses. Your child learns how to show a story, and not just write it as it is. They study how Shakespeare wrote, hear his words more fully, touch the imagery, smell that old cauldron (among other things!) and taste what we hear. We learn the importance of an audience and the reader and show them what it tastes like to sample ‘eye of newt’ and ‘toe of frog!’
Grammar and syntax find their way into a guessing game, with plenty of laughs and learning guaranteed. We figure out why Shakespeare used the Characters he did and what role they played in his dramas. Also how they went on journeys – called Character Arcs and why we need a Beginning, Middle and End! Children are encouraged and guided in the art of writing lines within dramas, sonnets and stories. We look at the three groupings of Shakespeare’s plays – Romance, Tragedies and Histories. The child learns how they are constructed, the famous quotes from each, how they relate to the reader, and what gives them lasting appeal. Within the Sonnets, we take a look at Iambic Pentameter, Assonances, Alliterations, Word Sounds and Rhythm. Each day unwinds with fun writing games devised by Shakespeare! All of this enables the children to become life-long Junior Shakespeares composing their own wonderful Shakespearean masterpieces within a safe, secure and creative Camp.
